The Mountain by: Drusilla Modjeska
A complex and beautiful story based on the people of Papua New Guniea - the people from the country and the people drawn to it. The readers are enveloped in characters and cultures across decades. The book begins in 2005, thirty-seven years after independence for PNG, when a native plans to return to his birth place in the mountains. Then, the book goes back those thirty-seven years, and brings the reader to the colony just as it is becoming a country, focusing on development of the island as well as the isolation of the native cultures. After the struggles of independence, as the story feels it is coming to a close, the reader is propelled to 2005 and follows the challenges and triumphs of a native returning to his distant homeland.
