The most popular way to get to Australia from the East Coast of the United States is through California. And the best way to get to Australia from the East Coast of the U.S. is through San Francisco with the aid of some good friends, like ours: Dan and Ingrid.

On our first day, Eric and I ventured out to the Golden Gate Bridge, referencing first the handy map Dan fashioned for us. The bridge was about a 45 minute walk through beautiful neighborhoods, an ecological park, and drizzling rain, and it was worth it. When we got in view of the Golden Gate Bridge, it was pretty foggy, so we took a few pictures, watched some sea lions play around in the bay, and then had lunch. After lunch, the view was clearer.
After a few more pictures with the bridge, we headed back towards the city. We ended up taking a bus or two and met Dan to get a tour of the brewery where he works.
In addition to an awesome tour guide, to the delight of our taste buds, Dan also happens to be a talented bar tender.
That evening, Dan and Ingrid took us to one of their favorite restaurants, the Pig and Whistle, for fish, chips, bangers, and mash. The food was delicious, and we even got to tune in to some of the Olympic Games. It was a great first full day in San Francisco.
